Hot Cup vs. Cold Cup: Choosing the Right Material

Single-wall, double-wall, ripple, PET, PP — we demystify cup materials so you can choose with confidence.

Hot Cups: Construction and Core Materials

Hot cups are constructed from a food-safe paperboard with a thin polyethylene (PE) lining on the interior that prevents leakage and protects the paper from moisture. The exterior is the printable surface — available in white for full-color printing or kraft brown for a natural, artisan aesthetic.

Hot cups are engineered to withstand beverages up to approximately 200°F (93°C). They are used for coffee, tea, hot chocolate, soup, and any other hot food-service application. The paperboard construction provides moderate insulation — sufficient for short periods but not designed for extended heat retention.

Single-Wall vs. Double-Wall Hot Cups

Single-wall cups are the most common and cost-effective format. They consist of a single layer of paperboard and are typically served with a separate corrugated sleeve to protect the customer's hand from heat. Single-wall cups are excellent for high-volume applications where cost efficiency is a priority.

Double-wall cups feature a second outer layer of paperboard that creates an air pocket between the two walls. This air pocket provides significantly better insulation — protecting hands without a sleeve and keeping beverages warmer for longer. Double-wall cups cost more per unit but eliminate the need for a separate sleeve and signal a premium experience.

Ripple Wall: The Third Option

Ripple wall cups add a third corrugated paper layer to the exterior that creates both insulation and a distinctive textured look. The corrugated ripple pattern is unmistakable and gives the cup a premium, artisan feel in the hand.

Ripple wall cups are popular in specialty coffee, boutique cafés, and premium food service operations where brand presentation and customer experience are priorities. They provide excellent insulation without any external sleeve and are fully customizable with wrap-around printing on the outer ripple layer.

Cold Cups: PET vs. PP and Clarity Options

Cold cups are manufactured from plastics designed to hold beverages at refrigerator temperature or below. The two most common materials are PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and PP (polypropylene), each with different clarity, rigidity, and print characteristics.

PET cups offer the highest optical clarity — crystal clear with excellent printability. They are the standard for smoothies, iced coffee, and cold beverages where product visibility matters. PP cups offer a slightly frosted appearance and greater flexibility. Frosted PP cups have a premium, matte feel and work well for brands that want a more refined, non-glossy aesthetic.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Options

Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration for cup selection. PrintCup USA offers several eco-friendly options, including cups made with PLA (polylactic acid) — a plant-based plastic derived from renewable resources like corn starch — and cups made from recycled content paperboard.

If sustainability claims are important to your brand, discuss certification requirements with our team. Some eco-friendly cup designations (compostable, recyclable, biodegradable) require specific composting infrastructure to be meaningful, and our team can help you understand the full picture so your claims are accurate and defensible.

Matching Material to Your Use Case

The right cup material depends on what you are serving, how you are serving it, the experience you want to create, and your budget. A specialty coffee shop serving lattes might choose a double-wall white cup with a full-color wrap. A juice bar might use frosted PP cold cups with a minimalist logo. A high-volume fast-food operation might use single-wall cups with corrugated sleeves for cost efficiency.

PrintCup USA manufactures across all these material categories. Our team will help you navigate the options and select the combination of material, size, and print finish that best serves your product, your brand, and your budget.
